Here is a little more info on Roses I typed up on my blog

Rose Hip (whole) Tincture - currently being tested, will be available soon.
An astringent for treating diarrhea, relieving colic or stomach pains, and an  effective anti-viral.  Tinctures hold Vitamin C and  the bio-chemically active nutritional and medicinal components in suspense, so this would also be good to boost the immune system to prepare for cold and flu season. Ingredients: Whole rose hips, 100 proof vodka.

Suggested dosage, 6-12 drops in a sip of liquid, but listen to your body.

$7  - 1 ounce
$13 - 2 ounces

Suggested dosage, 6-12 drops in a sip of liquid, but listen to your body.

1 ounce $7.00
2 ounces $13.00

Rose Hip Oils
Whole Rose hip oil contains unique properties beneficial for revitalizing and rejuvenating the skin.  It has been used in cosmetic and herbal medicines for centuries and in skin anti-aging remedies to combat freckles, brown spots and wrinkles, and promotes young, fresh looking skin. It is well tolerated by all kinds of skin and especially useful on the skin under the eyes.

Whole rose hip oil is used also as a dietary supplement, in particular to help improve conditions of digestive system, such as ulcers.*

If my skin is oily, I use hazelnut oil.  If it's dry, almond oil.  I never use olive oil on my face, but it's wonderful for arms and legs.

I typically wash my face with an all-natural mild soap containing animal fat, such as goat's milk.  Or just wash with a wet rag and no soap at all.  Pat my face dry and leave my face and hands damp.  I put about a quarter size amount of oil in my palm, rub on my hands and foreams.  Then lightly pat my hands to my face and under eyes.  The oil will absorb into the skin and will not leave an oily look.  After a time if the oil has not absorbed, just do a light water rinse, but I have never found that necessary.

Rose Hip infused Olive Oil - Ready 12-8-10
A standard infused oil.
$6 - 1 ounce
$11 - 2 ounces

Rose Hip infused Almond Oil - Ready 12-14-10
Almond oil infusions are particularly good for dry skin.*  I like to rub it into my cuticles.

$7 - 1 ounce
$13 - 2 ounces

Rose Hip infused Hazelnut Oil - Ready 12-08-10
Hazelnut oil is good to use for oily skin or those with acne because of it's astringent and toning qualities. If your hands are dry and your face is oily, do not rub this oil on the top of your hands when applying to your face.  It will dry your hands out even further.*
$7 - 1 ounce
$13 - 2 ounces

Rose Hip infused Almond and Hazelnut Oil combined - Ready 12-12-10
For in between skin types.

Rose hips

I have several ounces of semi-fresh rose hips available.  They are from the wild pink Multiflora Rose (Rosa multiflora var. cathayensis).  They were picked between 2-4 days ago and have been air drying.  They are still ruby red, and have all the stemlets removed.  With these you can make your own extracts, oils, vinegars or continue drying them for tea or infusions.  If you need instructions on creating any of these, I can help you.  These small rose hips are packed with Vitamin C.

$4 per ounce plus shipping (instead of the flat rate envelope or box, it'll be cheaper to ship based on weight and a half ounce large envelope from zip code 65470:)  Based on two zip codes the shipping was a little over $1.

8. Goldenrod extract

8. Goldenrod extract (tincture) - (Solidago spp., 50% alcohol)

Has been used for allergies (especially cat dander), hay fever, dripping sinuses, digestive aid, kidney and prostate problems, frequent urination, SAD or cold and gloomy blues, chronic fatigue and nervous exhaustion. Is an astringent, anti-inflamatory, diuretic and carminative (prevents or relieves gas). *

Can taken by the dropperful, but start smaller and see how you feel.

Though is seems illogical that goldenrod would help with allergies, the truth is that goldenrod doesn't cause allergies. Ragweed which is also in bloom at the same time is usually the culprit for allergy fits. Their flowers are greenish and not as eye catching as the goldenrod, so guess who gets the blame.

9. Juniper needle infused oil

9. Juniper needle infused oil -
(Juniperus Virginiana, Olive Oil, Vitamin E). Needles from a female tree full of berries.

This is NOT an essential oil and therefore generally non-irritating.

This incredibly fragrant infused oil is perfect for routine breast self-massage, especially for those with painful or lumpy breasts. *

"Evergreens contain compounds clinically proven to kill cancer cells. The most powerful in this respect ... cedar (Juniperus Virginiana). Evergreens contain antiseptic, anti-fungal, antiviral and anti-tumor oils." - Susun Weed

Just rubbing on your hands, cupping near your nose and smelling deeply can transport your mind to the dark, green woods. This is my favorite smelling oil and to me it smells like liquid Christmas.

Red Cedar (Juniper) is a folk remedy for arthritis, rashes, and skin ailments (Duke and Wain 1981); but I have not had the chance to use this oil for those conditions myself. I have just started using it for a sore knee and it does feel very nice after a massage with this oil.

Warning: If you have small cuts or scratches on your hands from briars and rub the excess oil over the top of your hands, it will sting a bit. Just wash off if you find little cuts on your hands you didn't know were there.

10. Juniper Berry extract

10. Juniper berry extract (tincture) - (Juniperus Virginiana, 50% alcohol)

Has been used to help water retention, urinary tract infections, sluggish kidneys, loss of tone in tissues and organs, rheumatoid arthritis; nerve, muscle, and tendon disorders; uterine tone, late or slow-starting menstrual periods, respiratory infections and expelling mucus, gas in digestive system, and balancing blood sugar.

Warning: Limit use to 4-6 weeks and avoid during pregnancy and nursing. Use cautiously if diabetic, can raise glucose levels. Avoid using if you are using prescribed medication for diabetes, diuretics, or suffer from kidney or frequent urinary tract problems.

Average dosage 10-20 drops, start small and work your way up if necessary. Drops can be taken in sip of water or used to massage into areas affected by gout.

Warning: I would not take Juniper berries in large doses as recommended at the end of this article. Such dosages day after day could be hard on the kidneys. Consult with your medical herbalist before taking such large dosages.

Elderberry Note #1

Note 1: for Elderberry
Take with recommended dosage of Zinc and adequate selenium (don't exceed 200 mcg) to correct the risk of a TH-1 and TH-2 imbalance created when a healthy immune system kills off large amounts of a virus in the body. This imbalance can result in a cytokine storm and is a slight risk during the flu with or without a flu remedy. Add sub-lingual B-12 for additional protection against cytokine storms. A cytokine storm is caused by too many immune cells activated in a single place and is an over-active immune response. The primary symptoms of a cytokine storm are high fever, swelling and redness, extreme fatigue and nausea; they have potential to do significant damage to body tissues and organs. Many cases of death during the pandemic flu of 1918 were from these cytokine storms, not the flu itself. Doctors believe that the same will happen with the swine H1N1 and H5N1 flu, but the data is still being analyzed.

Strengthen the immune system with vitamin C and D. Vitamin D storage is increased through skin exposure to outdoor sun and/or Mercury free fish oils. Be sure to get extra rest, Elderberry extract has a harder time if your immune system is worn down and a little extra sleep will increase its benefits greatly (some say tenfold). Finally, prior to taking this herb, prepare your body for a massive die-off of mycoplasma and/or other infections by hydrating methods. Drink lots of water, and spend a couple of days resting and if possible, fasting.

Elderberries are known to be effective against 8 strains of influenza. Taken before infection, may prevent; taken after infection, prevents spread of the virus through the respiratory tract. Elderberry extract tested in the laboratory and in double-blind human studies cut the severity and length of Influenza A and B significantly, within two days
IF taken at the onset of symptoms and taken appropriately. Laboratory documentation shows Elderberry preparations prevent the influenza virus from replicating, preventing an overload of virus in the body, thereby allowing the immune system to do its job of attacking the virus and neutralizing it.

A team at Retroscreen Virology, an institute associated with the University of London, said that the extract was at least 99 per cent effective against the H5N1 virus and significantly neutralized the infectivity of the virus in cell cultures. An in vitro study has shown Sambucol (a standardized extract of Black Elderberry) to be effective in increasing the production of four inflammatory cytokines, suggesting that the supplement may have an immuno-stimulatory effect and therefore be worth taking all year round to prevent flu and other disease.

A clinical trial of Elderberry extract during a severe flu outbreak around 1992-93 in Israel confirmed a perfect cure rate of severe flu victims there. Another study performed in Oslo, Norway more recently, around 2002, also confirmed the amazing efficacy for type A or B flu victims of several different strains. The cures mostly occurred in two days while a few were cured in three days. Tamiflu cures occur normally in 4.5 to 5 days. It took 6 days or more for the flu victims on placebos to recover.

According to the New York Times, February 5, 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) has admitted that Tamiflu is not as effective as previously believed. Black Elderberry extract is an alternative for several flu viruses, both type A and type B. It's a natural remedy that has no side effects and is inexpensive. It has been around for quite some time as a cold cure. But lately it has proven effective against virulent flus.

The Sydney (Australia) Herald on April 20, 2009 reported that a Japanese study had been completed on the side effects of Tamiflu with negative results. A major reason for the study was to determine if Japan should lift its ban on Tamiflu, which, the Herald article stated, was very unlikely because of the of the conclusion of that study.

Comments:

"I have very sensitive skin and the Plantain salve is the best thing I've used for itching and dryness. On my face and under my eyes, my skin is smoother and has fewer lines. A dark spot over my eye is also lighter since I've been using the salve. I'm so glad I tried this out! " - Judy B.
